The author, a German physician and neurologist, wanted to buy a picture book as a gift for his son for Christmas in 1844. Not impressed by what the bookstores had on their shelves, he decided to write his own stories and illustrate them. One year later, in 1845 his book was first published in Germany and went on to be translated and published in over 40 different languages and dialects until today.

While Struwwelpeter is somewhat notorious for its perceived brutal treatment of the erring children, it has been influential on many later children’s books, most notably Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
